PRESS RELEASE
Edible insects now on the menu with WA first.
This press release has been written on behalf of edible insect company Grubs Up
Adventurous cooks and early adopters of new food products will now be able to source Australian insects thanks to edible insect company Grubs Up. Based in Pinjarra, Western Australia, Grubs Up has started production of its unique and sustainable food retail products, including roasted crickets and mealworms.
Interest in insect consumption is growing in Western countries although they have long been a traditional food product in many Asian, African and South American cultures.
Grubs Up is hoping to change mainstream thinking about how consumers view edible insects, by promoting their high nutritional value as well as their excellent sustainability as a food source.
Generally described as having a nutty flavour, insects are extremely high in protein compared to other food sources. They have three times the protein of steak per 100g and also contain high levels of folate, iron and B12.
The founder of Grubs Up, Paul Pownall, realised the potential of insects as alternative protein sources while working in her field of agribusiness. She also has recently won the Nuffield Scholarship - Australia’s leading agricultural prize for primary producers - to continue R&D in this exciting new food development.
